It was recently revealed that the Queen had decided to ditch her famous rule of ‘never complain, never explain’. This came after the rift with Harry and Meghan continued to widen, with the Sussexes explosive claims about the Royal Family in interviews in America, from bullying and racism to allegations over financial matters.
It seems that the impact of the scrapping of the Queen’s mantra is already kicking in, with Clarence House now responding to claims made by Prince Harry over funding from his father. In his controversial Oprah interview with his wife, Harry claimed that he had been cut off financially by the Royal Family in the first few months of last year.
Clarence House has now stated the Prince of Wales continued to financially support Harry and Meghan until last summer, months after they relinquished their positions as senior royals. According to a spokesperson from Clarence House, Prince Charles provided the Sussexes with a ‘substantial sum’ to support them.
Couple is now financially independent
The revelations were made by Clarence House as the royal accounts were published. The spokesperson also said while financial support had continued for way longer than Harry had claimed in his Oprah interview, the Sussexes were now financially independent.
Over recent months, the pair have been engaging in all sorts of activities to make money, from various interviews through to deals with Netflix and even a book. However, despite raking in vast sums of cash from their endeavours, Harry has been quick to make allegations about the lack of financial support provided to him by his father.
While the couple quit as senior royals in March 2020, the release of the royal accounts indicates they were still receiving funding from Prince Charles's Duchy of Cornwall income. According to Clarence House, this support ended in the summer of 2020, and not in the first few months as claimed by Harry.
A senior official from Clarence House said, “As we'll all remember in January 2020 when the duke and duchess announced that they were going to move away from the working royal family, the duke said that they would work towards becoming financially independent. The Prince of Wales allocated a substantial sum to support them with this transition. That funding ceased in the summer of last year. The couple is now financially independent.”
Royals likely to respond to future allegations
The wide range of allegations made by Harry and Meghan over recent months were responded to with quiet dignity by the Palace. The Queen’s mantra of ‘don’t complain, don’t explain’ meant that there were limitations with regard to how the Royal Family could respond.
However, with the Queen now ditching this rule because of the issues faced with the Sussexes, there could be many more revelations in the pipeline from the Royal Family as long as Harry and Meghan keep making various allegations.
