Valentine’s Day is not just for couples – it’s a great excuse to show yourself some love as well. This year, Valentine’s Day falls in the middle of a Covid-19 lockdown, but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate. Many single people struggle to know what to do on Valentine’s Day, but there are so many types of love to celebrate. The love you have for your family, your friends and yourself deserve to be celebrated too.
Any other year, being single on Valentine’s Day would mean going out and having fun with your single friends. There’s no reason that lockdown has to spoil all the fun! We’ve put together a few ideas on how to make the day special and celebrate safely at home, even if you’re single.
Plan a video call with your friends
Valentine’s Day makes many single people feel lonely – but it doesn’t have to be that way. Even when you can’t go out with all of your single friends, you can still have fun and catch up from home. Round up a few of your best friends, crack a bottle of wine and make the day an excuse to spend some virtual time with your loved ones.
To make it feel more like the real thing, you can plan to make the same cocktails or eat dinner together at home. It’s the closest thing we can get to a restaurant and bar at the moment. If you prefer a more relaxed, low-key Valentine’s Day, watch a TV series or movie together. There are a few apps you can use to do this, or you can just hit play at the same time and pause when you want to have a chat in between.
Pamper yourself
If you’re single on Valentine’s Day, it’s the perfect opportunity to show yourself some love and pamper yourself. You can get face masks, bath salts and candles at your local supermarket or order them online in advance. Draw yourself a bath or just get cosy on the sofa and do all the things you don’t usually do for yourself.
If there’s a new beauty product you’ve been wanting to try, this is the day to indulge. It’s only one day, so forget about your usual diet and budgeting and splash out a little to make it feel extra special.
Celebrate being single
One of the best things about being single is that you don’t have to compromise to someone else’s tastes. Use this day to do the things you love the people you usually spend time with don’t like to do. No one can see you or hear you, so you can be as silly and embarrassing as you like in the comfort of your own home.
Do you have a favourite comfort meal that’s not to everyone’s taste? Cook it up for yourself. Is there music that you love but you don’t often get to listen to? Put it on, turn up the volume and dance your heart out in the living room. Do you live for karaoke but your friends don’t like it? Get up some karaoke versions of your favourite songs on YouTube and sing them into your hairbrush.
Treat yourself
Gift giving is not a tradition that is reserved for couples. Even if your single, use Valentine’s Day as a good excuse to buy yourself something nice. We all know how cathartic online shopping can be, so even if you’re not usually one to spend frivolously, get yourself a little treat to celebrate the day.
Whether it’s the dress you’ve been dreaming about for a while or just your favourite chocolates and bottle of wine, treat yourself! It’s been a hell of a year, and we could all use something special for ourselves.
Go on a virtual date
If you were dating pre-lockdown, you could use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to get back on the horse. Virtual dates can seem daunting at first but give it a try and you might be surprised. There’s less pressure on virtual dates than when you’re face-to-face with someone and if you’re not enjoying it, you can always blame it on issues with your internet connection.
It will also give you a good excuse to get dolled up. You always want to make a good first impression on a first date, so put a bit of effort in and pop on a little make-up and a nice top. If it doesn’t work out, you can either enjoy being dressed up and looking your best, or just change into your pyjamas and relax knowing you tried something new!
The key to the best lockdown Valentine’s Day
When you’re single, Valentine’s Day is all about you. The key to the best Valentine’s Day on your own is to use it an excuse to treat yourself and do things you don’t usually get the chance to do. It can be as extravagant or relaxed as you want it to be. Whether you want to indulge in your favourite food, watch your favourite film or indulge in something new, do it for yourself. Show yourself some love – you deserve it.
